This is a simple story without words, based on a traditional tale. It is summertime, and two ants are busy collecting food for the winter, while a grasshopper spends his days lazing around. When winter comes, the ants are prepared, but the grasshopper has no food. In the original tale there is just one ant, who at the end of the story refuses to give the grasshopper any food. This telling has attracted much controversy over the centuries, and here the story has been revised so that there are now two ants. In this version, the first ant refuses to help the grasshopper, but the second ant does share its food. This offers the opportunity to explore with the children which ant behaved in the best way, and why. Should the grasshopper be punished for its laziness and/or foolishness? This book is designed for the first stage of teaching children to read, before they begin learning their letters.
