The Ghost of Acorn

29 Apr 2024 - 9:00 AM to 20 Jul 2024 - 5:00 PMMedway Archives Centre
Event

In 2016, much of Acorn Shipyard in Rochester was destroyed by fire. Over the following year, Luna Zsigo and Neil Thorne captured thousands of photographs documenting the final chapter of its life.

In 2023, a collection of their favourite photographs were displayed at the Royal Engineers Museum in Gillingham. Since then, some of the men who worked at the shipyard have been kind enough to share their experiences and photos of Acorn's heyday. Luna and Neil will use this space to tell their stories and learn more about this important part of Medway's history.

Weekdays 9am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 12.30pm (closed Wednesday and Sunday).

Event

What do you do with a broken toaster? Or with a bike when the wheel gets a puncture? Or with a jumper full of moth holes? Toss it? No way!

Medway Libraries is organising the first Repair Café in Strood Community Hub on Saturday 20th January, from 10.30 am to 1pm.

Everything centres on making repairs. Starting from 10.30am and ending at 1pm, various volunteer repair experts will be available to help make all possible repairs free of charge! Tools and some materials will also be on hand (additional parts may need to be ordered by you). People visiting the Repair Café will bring along their broken items from home. Toasters, lamps, hair dryers, clothes, bikes, toys, crockery... anything that is broken is welcome. And can more than likely be repaired. The Repair Café specialists almost always have the know-how.

MAC Lecture Series: The Lost Village of Gillingham

03 Jul 2024 - 2:00 PM to 3:30 PMMedway Archives Centre
Event

Speaker: Catharina Clement

Today we think of Gillingham as a large urban area, but it was not always so. Until incorporation in 1903 it was a thriving village in its own right, centred around the parish church of St Mary Magdalene. Sadly, very little of it survives today. Come and discover the illustrated history of the original village.

Catharina Clement has a PhD in Local History from Canterbury Christ Church University. Her interests lie in anything that was unconventional in the past, like nonconformity, conscientious objection, and the anti-slavery movement. More recently she has focused on her home town of Gillingham and its history.

Medway Archives Centre Lecture Series:

This is talk six in the Medway Archives Centre (MAC) series of six lectures.
