The early 5th century AD and the Western Roman Empire has been overrun by German tribes. Aetius, the last of the great Roman generals, becomes the virtual ruler of the West, and in a series of brilliant campaigns, he takes on the German tribes, forcing them to settle peacefully. But his old friend Attila, leader of the Huns, launches a devastating attack on the Eastern Empire, before turning his attention to the West. A confrontation between the two - now bitter enemies - is inevitable. In the epic battle that ensues, the stakes for Attila and Aetius could not be higher as the fates of both empires hang in the balance.
