Books
Split into two parts, Kathy Maclean's memoirs of her 1950's childhood in Havelock North, New Zealand evoke a longing for the simple pleasures of growing up in a large, busy family. The six siblings had room to roam, trees to climb and as many apples a day as they cared to eat. It was a time when fresh air and exercise rather than the Internet provided answers. Kathy loved school, animals and running barefoot in their Havelock North orchard. There were hand-me-down clothes and no posh holidays, but she thrived, grew willowy, spread her wings and flew. Part two explores the journeys of the Maoris of the Great Migration and the intrepid explorers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; to the transportation of convicts to Australia and the emigrants who arrived as pioneers in the nineteenth century. Kathy has examined and superbly researched their stories.
