First World War trials and executions

Webb, Simon (Historian)2021
Books
The years 1914 to 1918 saw a number of the most fascinating British murder cases of the twentieth century; including those of Voisin and George, 'Brides in the Bath', Smith. There were many other, less well-known, but equally interesting cases, however. Charles Frembd, the German grocer who, at the age of 71, was the oldest person to be executed in this country during the last century. Almost as intriguing as the crimes themselves and subsequent trials, are the scenes which took place during the executions which followed. These include the death of a condemned prisoner from a heart attack; seconds before he was hanged, and the bungled execution which left a man to choke to death at the end of a rope, rather than having his neck cleanly broken. Although the overwhelming majority of executions in this country have been by hanging, World War I saw a dozen men facing firing squads for espionage.
