Jon Grant was the 3x great grandfather of the author. He was born in Chatham and joined the Royal Navy in 1803 when he was 13. After 12 years of service he married and had a family. He retired from the Navy in 1828 after 25 years of service when he returned to Chatham and found employment in the Dockyard.
